Weekly Haul 7/9/14

Comic Book Shop

The New 52: Futures End #10
This book remains on my pull list because apparently I have too much disposable income.  There are so many moving parts to this story that it seems fragmented and while it is released every week it is a struggle to remember what was going on when it picks back up on the plot line it last advanced three weeks ago.

Batman Eternal #14
After sitting down and rereading this series from the beginning I am looking forward to this issue.  I consider myself a Batman fan however my knowledge of anything aside from the classic Batman stories is limited at best.  This series is painting a nice picture of everyone in the current Batman universe and their relations to one another.  It is also a bunch of fun to see the parade of artists’ different take on the characters.

The Walking Dead #129
I started reading The Walking Dead when the last arc, All Out War, began.  This arc started with #127 and while my interest has tapered a bit since the end of AOW I am hopeful that things are about to get interesting again.  It is my understanding that one of the strengths of this series is the breadth of characters Robert Kirkman has created and I must admit Negan is one of my favorites, in any comic.  Don’t let the triple digit issue number scare you away from this awesome series.  If you can’t sleep at night unless you know everything that has ever happened you can pick up The Walking Dead Compendium 1 and 2  for $35 a piece on amazon and that will get you to issue #96 which really makes the series seem much more manageable.

Detective Comics #33
This is my second favorite Bat title at the moment.  The current story arc started with #30 and it shouldn’t be very hard to track down back issues is you want to jump on for the ride.  If anybody is talking about this comic they can’t do so with talking about the art and there is a good reason for that, it is stunning.  The story so far hasn’t really grabbed me but I could look at Francis Manapul’s work for days.

American Vampire: Second Cycle #4
Scott Snyder is one of my favorite writers in comics right now.  His work with Greg Capullo on Batman has prompted me to keep an eye out for anything else he is putting out there which led me to The Wake and American Vampire.  Four years ago Snyder teamed up with Stephen King to write a story about vampires, real vampires.  Snyder set out to make vampires scary again and he has done a masterful job.  If you are unfamiliar with this series I’d highly recommend giving volume 1 a shot which can be yours for $15 on amazon, $10 if you want to go the digital route.

Spread #1
If you are looking for a new book to add to your pull list how about trying Spread.  This is a new book through Image, which could be hit or miss.  One man must protect humanities hope to fight off an alien infestation, that key being an infant.  I’m willing to give it a shot, if for no other reason than I want to support non-super hero comic book market.

Amazing X-Men #9

A while ago I decided I needed to have a Marvel book besides The Punisher on my pull list because I wasn’t sure how much longer it would be there and I’d feel weird completely ignoring half of the comic book world.  This prompted me start reading Amazing X-Men.  Since then I have developed a taste for X-Men and have been testing the waters with some their other titles.  If you are looking to jump in on an X-Men series this one is as good as any and the current arc started with #8.
